Visiting Your Local Aquarium Supports Wildlife Conservation

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – June is Zoo and Aquarium Month, making now the perfect time to visit your local aquarium – the Texas State Aquarium – or another nearby facility accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums. Not only are most children out of school by June, allowing for plenty of summertime visit opportunities, but each visit helps sustain a variety of programs to support animal care and wildlife conservation at the Aquarium and beyond.

The Texas State Aquarium, for its part, is a nonprofit aquarium with the mission “to engage with people with animals, inspire appreciation for our seas, and support wildlife conservation.” To that end, the proceeds it receives from admission goes to further these important causes. That includes first and foremost Animal Care standards that are designed to provide animals the most rewarding lives possible, including spacious and naturally-lit exhibits, restaurant-quality food and the latest and greatest medical care treatments.

And while it’s apparent to many guests that the Aquarium’s animals receive fantastic care, the Aquarium also hopes that guests observing these “animal ambassadors” learn a little more about their “cousins” in the wild and how they can help protect them. In that spirit, guest admission also helps support the Aquarium’s wide-reaching wildlife conservation efforts. When guests pay to enter the Aquarium or become a Member, they’re helping rescue, heal and rehabilitate ill and injured wildlife through their support of the Aquarium’s Wildlife Rescue Center. They’re also helping provide financial assistance to conservationists and research scientists across the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico. In recent years, the Aquarium has supported the real-time web-based tracking of sharks and studying the genetic composition of Kemp’s ridley sea turtles, among dozens of other projects. Since opening their newest experience, Caribbean Journey, the Aquarium has supported the exploration and mapping of cenotes, marine caverns in the Yucatán Peninsula, and has aided in the protection of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve through regular donations to the non-governmental organization Amigos de Sian Ka’an.

All in all, the Aquarium hopes that when guests visit the largest aquarium in Texas, they know that they’re not only in for an immersive and educational experience, but that they’re supporting animal care and wildlife conservation both in Corpus Christi and abroad.

The Texas State Aquarium is open daily. Parking is included in your admission price. To purchase tickets in advance and skip the line or to learn more about exhibits, hours and other visitor information, visit http://www.texasstateaquarium.org.
