Texas State Aquarium Joins Padre Island National Seashore for “Ridley Rendezvous”

The event will take place from approximately 6:30 a.m. – 1 p.m. Beginning at 9 a.m., the Texas State Aquarium’s sea turtle mascot “Tiki” will be present and an Aquarium table will feature educational activities centering on sea turtle conservation. Footage from the Aquarium’s recent sea turtle rescue efforts will also be shown in the  Malaquite Visitor Center Auditorium at Padre Island National Seashore.

“Ridley Rendezvous” celebrates the 40th year of successful collaboration of the bi-national, multi-agency Kemp’s Ridley Sea Turtle Restoration and Enhancement Project at Padre Island National Seashore. The family-friendly event will feature special Jr. Ranger Badges, art exhibits, and appearances by Padre Island National Seashore’s mascot, Sandy the Sea Turtle. The event will also have a public sea turtle release at 6:45 a.m. and 10:15 a.m.

“We’re honored to be a guest of the Padre Island National Seashore to help them celebrate four decades of Kemp’s ridley sea turtle conservation,” said Jesse Gilbert, Senior VP and COO at the Texas State Aquarium. “Events like Ridley Rendezvous are important in showing the incredible work that can be done when conservation organizations and the community come together, and in getting the word out to the public about what still needs to be done to secure a future for endangered sea turtles.”

Gilbert credits the Aquarium’s record sea turtle rescue effort in early 2018, when over 1,000 sea turtles were rescued and released back into their natural habitat, to TSA’s partnership with PINS and the support of other community and conservation groups.
