Learn How to Save the Sea at the Texas State Aquarium’s World Oceans Day on June 9

June 8, 2018

CORPUS CHRISTI, TX – The Texas State Aquarium will commemorate World Oceans Day – a global holiday aimed at conserving ocean habitats – with educational games and activities on June 9 from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m.

Available experiences will include special ocean-themed animal enrichment, an ocean-focused art project by the Art Center of Corpus Christi and games that show how plastic pollution endangers the ocean.  All activities will be included at no extra charge with guest admission or membership.

Aquarium staff say these interactive activities, like wearing “flippers” to see how difficult it is for sea turtles and dolphins to escape plastic entanglement or sorting items by how long they take to decompose – give guests a much more involved look at the issues of ocean conservation to deliver message which is more likely to stick with them. The Aquarium hopes guests leave World Oceans Day with a better idea of how they can do their part to save the ocean, including picking up trash at the beach, reducing their consumption of single-use plastic, and recycling whenever possible.

But that’s not to say they can’t have plenty of fun in the process. Games like Tic Tac Tocean, Recycling Corn Hole, and Eco Bubbles involve plenty of entertainment as well as education. Like many of their exhibits and presentations, the Aquarium knows it’s important to capture their guests’ attention – especially that of younger visitors – before they can teach them anything.

The Texas State Aquarium is open daily. On June 9, the Aquarium will be open 9 a.m. – 6 p.m., and World Oceans Day activities will be available from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. Parking is included in your admission price.
