Summer SeaCamp

Making discoveries on the Texas Gulf Coast, diving to the bottom of the Caribbean Sea, or exploring the jungles of Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula – these and many more up-close and hands-on experiences await your child at SeaCamp 2019, an immersive, educational journey for pre-school through high school learners.

     

SeaCamp Philosophy: Our camps and camp environments are designed to support inclusive and collaborative learning, promote STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) exploration and discovery, and empower campers to reach their full potential.

All SeaCamp weeks include age-appropriate:
  • Hands-on, inquiry-based STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) activities,
  • Creative and play-to-learn fun,
  • Outdoor education, and
  • Thematic discovery.

Cancellation/Refund Policy: Cancellation notices must be received by Rosanna Gossett at rgossett@txstateaq.org at least 30 days prior to the camp start date, in order to qualify for a 50% refund.  Scheduling changes will incur a $10.00 rescheduling fee.  We are unable to offer refunds or pro-rated fees due to illness or weather conditions.  See the Parent Packet for additional information.

Reservations and payments should be made online by Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. the week before your camp begins.

Camp Schedule

  • Check-in and drop-off begin at 8:45 a.m.  Camp programming for all age groups begins promptly at 9:00 a.m.
  • SeaSquirts camp ends daily at 12:00 p.m.
  • Camps for grades 1 through 12 end at 4:00 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and 1:30 p.m. on Friday, when campers are encouraged to bring their adult to SeaCamp for the afternoon!

BEFORE AND AFTER CARE

  • We offer Before Care for all age groups, and After Care for grades 1 – 12.  We do not offer After Care for SeaSquirts.
  • Before Care is $20 per week and runs from 7:30 – 8:45 a.m.
  • After Care is $20 per week and runs from 4:15 – 5:30 p.m. on Monday through Thursday, and 1:45 – 5:30 p.m. on Friday.
  • Reservations and payments should be made online by Thursday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. the week before your camp begins.

Please note:  Late fees may be charged for excessive or repetitive late pick-ups.

SeaSquirts (Pre-K and Kindergarten)

  • Feathers, Furs, Skins, and Scales

    (For campers ages 4 and 5 that have turned four by June 10, 2019.) 

    Your camper will visit the animals where they live and engage in creative play and storytelling to discover what makes a bird a bird and a fish a fish (plus mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and more).

    During this camp, SeaSquirts engage in creative play, scientific discovery, and storytelling to learn what makes each Aquarium habitat the perfect home for its resident animals.

During this exhilarating week, campers will dive right into in learning hands-on about the physical adaptations, behaviors and unique habitats of sharks. In the end they will become experts in determining what’s shark fact and what’s fiction!

  • Amazing Animals

    Campers become their favorite animals when they hunt like a shark, camouflage like an octopus, or balance like a flamingo to learn how to live in the most unlikely environments.  This camp includes Tuesday through Friday visits to the H-E-B Splash Park, weather permitting.

    Calling all Animal Protectors: the fate of endangered animals hangs in the balance, and the Aquarium needs your help! See and learn about animals in danger and what you can do to protect them. Weather permitting, second and third graders will visit Splash Park on Tuesday through Friday.

    Dust off your hat, pack your backpack, and get your sunscreen ready for an exciting expedition through ecosystems of the Gulf of Mexico and the Yucatan Peninsula. Fourth and Fifth graders will visit our Splash Park or engage in an alternate water-based activity on Tuesday through Friday, weather permitting.

    It’s time to hit the road to support wildlife in our local habitats. In addition to Aquarium tours, we’ll conduct daily scientific studies to help us compare a variety of South Texas ecosystems.

    To be honest, sometimes science can get a little bit messy, but that’s when it’s the most fun! On adventures throughout the Coastal Bend, campers will experience science at its dirtiest. Working at different locations allows participants to experience how scientists conduct field work.

    Please note that this is a field trip-based camp and includes one overnight experience.

  • Come Sail Away (Our ‘makers camp’)

    (For campers entering 8th or 9th grade in Fall 2019)  

    As a team, campers will be designing and building a working model boat. Using science, technology, engineering, and math, their team will have several tasks to accomplish to successfully complete their floating creations. To aid in these tasks, they will take field trips throughout the community and meet with local experts. Finally, their boat design will be tested for strength and speed in a competitive regatta!

  • Marine Ecology

    (For campers entering 10th thru 12th grade in Fall 2019)

    In a rapidly-changing environment, marine ecologists are at the forefront of research and conservation. They are among the first to know of changes in animal populations and their habitats. During this camp, you will travel to local ecosystems and work alongside STEM professionals to study how animals interact with each other and their environment.

  • Next Step, STEM!

    More than just a first-rate facility for animal care, Texas State Aquarium is also a center for cutting edge research. During this inquiry-based camp, you will not only learn the tools and skills necessary to conduct STEM investigations, but will work with a professional mentor to guide your original research project. Come join us and launch yourself towards a bright future in STEM!

    Special Note:  In addition to one week during the summer, this camp includes four Saturdays during the 2019 fall semester to continue conducting your research.  Projects will be suitable for science and engineering fair submission.
