KEEPER I – BIRDS AND SMALL MAMMALS
Regular Full-Time
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Assist in the primary care and training of the avian and small mammal collection.
- Participates in bird/small mammal care, exhibitory and training.
- Morning and closing duties in assigned work areas.
- Perform daily programs, as well as off-site presentations.
- May assist rehab patients under the direction of a Keeper II of birds and mammals.
- Follow verbal and written instructions regarding diet and rehab procedures.
- May assist rehab with medical procedures. Contacts and consults with keeper II and or Curator of Marine Mammals and birds before animal medical treatments are given.
- Maintain feeding, training and medical logs.
- Observe animal behavior and report unusual/abnormal behavior to supervisor.
- May plan and direct the work of support staff and volunteers.
- Works under the guidelines as stated in TSA’s federal and state permits.
- Understands and follows Standard Operating Procedures in work areas.
- Maintain and clean show areas and rehab hospital. Clean, maintain and store utensils and equipment used to feed and care for animals.
- Order work area supplies under $50.00.
- Responsible for contributing to the maintenance and cleanliness of the wet area and bird and small mammal areas.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of the husbandry and maintenance of birds and small mammals in a protective environment
- Knowledge in the safe handling of raptors for restraint and presentations. - A basic knowledge of Operant Conditioning and how it is applied to training birds and small mammals
- Skill in public speaking and programming
- Ability to give various types of medications
- Knowledge of the anatomy of birds
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to precisely follow complex instructions provided both verbally and in writing
- Ability to use data processing equipment, i.e. keyboard, printer
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays as required, including the ability to work a rotating shift as assigned
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience which would likely produce the required knowledge, skills and abilities; degree in biology or related is preferred
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Texas driver's license and an insurable driving record

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed both in- and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, walk, stoop, bend, reach, and to perform strenuous duties while both in and out of the water is required. Subject to bites and stings by animals.
