AQUARIST
Regular Full-Time
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Responsible for an assigned exhibit area.
- Clean and maintain assigned exhibits.
- Observe animal behavior and report unusual/abnormal behavior to supervisor.
- Prepare animal diets and feed according to established procedures.
- Responsible for the day to day maintenance of LSS system and water quality perimeters in assigned area.
- May be responsible for other exhibits on staff days off.
- Maintain records of animal behavior, medications, and related data for assigned area
- Make necessary water quality adjustments in assigned areas.
- May enter exhibits by use of scuba equipment to clean exhibitry, provide animal care, and/or feed.
- May supervise volunteers in primary areas of responsibility.
- Perform daily visitor programs.
- May seine and collect with Sr. staff.
- May assist in design and set-up of exhibit displays.
- Make presentations to the public, both within the Aquarium and at other sites, regarding animal matters.
- Contribute to the maintenance and cleanliness of the wet area.
MARGINAL FUNCTIONS:
Perform related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES REQUIRED:
- Knowledge of the maintenance of fish and marine invertebrates in captivity.
- Knowledge of salt water chemistry
- Knowledge of local marine life
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both verbally and in writing
- Ability to precisely follow complex instructions provided both verbally and in writing
- Ability to use data processing equipment, i.e. keyboard, printer.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, holidays as required, including the ability to work a rotating shift as assigned
EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:
Any combination of education and experience which would likely produce the required knowledge, skills and abilities; degree in marine biology, chemistry or related is preferred
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:
Valid Texas driver's license and an insurable driving record
Open water diving certification, or the ability to complete open water dive training as assigned

WORKING CONDITIONS:
Work is performed both in- and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions. Physical ability to lift up to 50 pounds, walk, stoop, bend, reach, and to perform strenuous duties while both in and out of water is required. Subject to bites and stings by animals.
